Ryan Grubb said on Tuesday evening that he expects Washington running back Dillon Johnson to be able to play in the national championship game next week.

Johnson suffered an injury in the final minute of Washington’s semifinal win over Texas. He had to be carted off the field following Washington’s final offensive play of the game.

Grubb said in a radio interview with Dave Mahler and Dick Fain that x-rays taken at the stadium came back negative and that Johnson is expected to be able to play vs. Michigan.

If Johnson is able to play, it would be a big boost for the Huskies’ offense. Johnson was Washington’s leading rusher this season with 1,162 yards and 16 touchdowns in 13 games. He scored a pair of touchdowns in Washington’s win over Texas on Monday night in the Sugar Bowl.

Washington does not have much proven depth behind Johnson in the backfield. Will Nixon and Tybo Rogers are Washington’s next two leading rusher, but neither player cleared the 200-yard threshold this season.

Washington will face Michigan in the national title game on Jan. 8.
