Barcelona is running fourth in the 2023-’24 Spanish LaLiga standings with an 11-5-2 record and 38 points entering Thursday’s matches. The Barca defensive effort is worth watching in this matchup with uneven efforts on that front spanning recent LaLiga matches and a 3-2 loss to Antwerp in the UEFA Champions League. Barcelona allowed three goals in a 3-2 loss to América in a club friendly on Dec. 21 and suffered a 4-2 loss to Girona in LaLiga play earlier in the month. For December alone, Barca was even in scoring with seven goals and seven allowed, which is far from the club’s more pristine 34 goals and 21 allowed (+13) for the season.

At the same time, Las Palmas has scored the second-fewest goals in LaLiga thus far with 15 in 18 matches, but also leads the league with just 15 goals allowed. Las Palmas has given up more than one goal in just one of its 18 contests, a 2-1 loss to first-place Real Madrid, and sits in 10th place in LaLiga standings with a 7-4-7 record and 25 points. And in the case of Thursday’s match against Barcelona, one point for a draw would be a nice result, but three points for victory remains on the table if Las Palmas puts forth another sterling defensive effort. Barcelona has a chance to climb a spot in the standings with a win, but Las Palmas could move up as many as three spots with an upset.
