Riyadh, August 28: Roberto Mancini has been appointed coach of the Saudi national football team, the Saudi Football Association confirmed on Monday, days after the Italian resigned from coaching the Azzurri.

The 58-year-old has reportedly signed a four-year contract worth €25m per year, Xinhua news agency reports.

Mancini wrote on social media: “I am excited to announce that I have joined the Saudi Football Association as a coach for the national team.”

He added, “I am delighted and honored to be selected for this prestigious role, as a sign of appreciation and recognition for all the work that has been accomplished over these years. I would like to thank President Yasser Al-Mishal.”

And after coaching Lazio, Inter Milan, Manchester City and many other clubs, Mancini took over the Azzurri in 2018 and helped them win Euro 2020. But Italy failed to qualify for the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

Mancini will play his first match next September, and will lead Saudi Arabia to participate in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers and the Asian Cup in Qatar.
